Version: v1.0

Une version française de ces conditions est offerte. Elle est la version de référence. Version française

Interim version. These terms are interim: a lawyer has not yet reviewed them. Any change after that review is posted as section 13 says.

These terms apply to tax-explained.com and www.tax-explained.com (the "site"). They say what the calculator is and isn't, the rules the site applies, and what you can expect from us. They ask no one to give up a right the law protects.

In short

  • The calculator gives estimates. It is not tax, legal, accounting or financial advice.
  • Check with the CRA, Revenu Québec or a qualified professional before you rely on a result.
  • The site is free, with no accounts and no payments.
  • Don't overload or attack the site, or collect its results with automated tools.
  • A shared link shows the amounts you entered to anyone who has it.
  • The law where you live may give you rights that these terms can't take away.

1. Who runs the site

The site is run by its owner ("we"), an individual in British Columbia, Canada.

To reach us, see section 14.

2. What the calculator does

The calculator estimates Canadian income tax and take-home pay. It uses what you enter (gross annual earnings, RRSP and FHSA contributions, province or territory, and tax year) and the general tax rules for that year.

It offers the current tax year and the two years before it. The rules for the current year can change during the year, for example after a budget. We update the rules when governments publish them, but an update can take time.

3. What it is not

  • Not a final amount. It leaves out much that changes real tax: other income, most deductions and credits, your family situation, tax already withheld, and more. Your real tax can differ, sometimes by a lot.
  • Not advice. The site gives no tax, legal, accounting or financial advice, and recommends no product, plan or strategy. It says so at the foot of every page and with every result.
  • Not a tax return. It files nothing and sends nothing to any government.
  • Not official. We are not part of the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), Revenu Québec or any government, and they don't endorse the site.

Before you make a decision, file a return or make a payment, check with the CRA (canada.ca), Revenu Québec (revenuquebec.ca) or a qualified professional. You remain responsible for your own tax return.

4. Free, with no account

The site is free. It has no accounts, asks for no payment and sells nothing. The "Sign In" button in the header is not active.

5. Using the site

You may use the site and its results for your own needs, personal or professional, and share them.

Please don't:

  • use robots, scrapers or other automated tools to collect results or to send many requests. Search engines may still index the site's pages;
  • send traffic that slows the site down or harms it for others. The site limits how many calculations can be asked for each minute under one session cookie, and for all requests sent without one: don't try to get around that limit;
  • try to break into the site, test its security without our written permission, or get around its protections;
  • use the site to break the law, or present its results as official figures or as our advice.

The site refuses requests above its limits, and traffic that harms it or its visitors.

The site's text, visual design and code belong to its owner or are used under licence. Some parts, such as the fonts, have licences of their own. Apart from using and sharing calculator results, ask us before copying the site's text, visual design or code.

"Share" opens your device's share options, where it has them and they can take the link, so you can send a link to your calculation; otherwise, or if they fail, it copies the link. The link holds, in its address, the province, tax year and amounts you entered.

  • Closing the share options without choosing where to send the link shares nothing.
  • A copied link is on your device's clipboard, which your operating system may sync to your other devices.
  • Anyone who has the link can see those amounts. So can the services that carry it, such as a messaging app, and the browser history of any device that opens it.
  • When someone opens the link, the amounts reach our server in the page address. Our privacy policy says what our servers log.
  • We can't recall a link once you have shared it.

Share a link only with people you choose, and share someone else's amounts only with their agreement.

7. Availability and changes to the site

We work to keep the site available and its results accurate. We don't promise that it will always be available, free of errors or up to date. We may change, suspend or stop the site, or any part of it, at any time.

Beyond the guarantees that the law gives you and that can't be excluded, we give none.

8. Our responsibility

Your rights stay yours. Québec's Consumer Protection Act and Civil Code, and the consumer laws of other provinces and countries, give you rights that these terms can't remove or limit. A consumer in Québec can always hold us responsible for the consequences of our own acts. We never limit our responsibility for intentional or gross fault, or for bodily or moral injury. Nothing in these terms takes away a right that the law doesn't allow us to remove.

9. Privacy

Our privacy policy explains what personal information we collect, why, for how long, and your rights. It is a separate document, not part of these terms, and these terms ask for no consent to anything it describes.

10. Messages

We don't send email, texts or other electronic messages to visitors, and the site has no mailing list. If we ever offer one, we will ask for your consent separately, never through these terms.

11. Governing law and courts

If you are a consumer in Québec, these terms are governed by the laws of Québec and the federal laws of Canada that apply there, and the courts of Québec hear disputes about them.

Otherwise, they are governed by the laws of British Columbia and the federal laws of Canada that apply there, and the courts of British Columbia hear disputes. If you are a consumer, you keep the protection of the mandatory laws of the place where you live, and you can go to the courts there when those laws allow it.

These terms never require arbitration, and never stop you from taking part in a class action.

If a court finds part of these terms invalid, the rest still applies.

12. Language

These terms are available in French and in English, free and on the same terms, and each version links to the other. The French version is the reference version. If the versions differ, you may rely on the one more favourable to you. Visitors who read the site in French see the French version first, as do those who have not chosen a language and whose browser's language settings name neither English nor French.

13. Changes to these terms

We may change these terms, for example when the site or the law changes. We post each new version here with its date and version number, and show a notice on the site for 30 days. A change that adds to your obligations or reduces your rights is posted at least 30 days before it applies, with the old and new text. Other changes apply when posted. Each visit is governed by the version in effect that day, never by a later one. Earlier versions are available on request.
